============================================================================= == Win/V: The Japanese Language Kit for Windows Ver.1.23 Demo == == (c) Fast River Systems 1994, 1995, 1996 == == README.TXT: Last Modified January 25, 1995 == ============================================================================= INTRODUCTION ============ Win/V is system software that allows English Windows, Windows for Workgroups and HP OmniBook ROM Windows to use Japanese Applications, Kanji True Type fonts, Windows Intelligent Font Environment (WIFE) Fonts and Kana-Kanji Front-End Processors. Before Starting =============== This is a special Internet demo version of Win/V. It is fully functional except for the following limitations: - Only one bitmap system font size. - English application helpers disabled. - Kanji TrueType Fonts cannot be added. COMPATIBLE WINDOWS VERSIONS =========================== Win/V supports the following versions of Windows; 1)Microsoft Windows 3.1/3.11 2)Microsoft Windows for Workgroups 3.1/3.11 3)Hewlett-Packard OmniBook/ROM Windows 3.1 4)IBM OS/2 2.1 5)IBM OS/2 2.1 for Windows, Warp 3 6)NEXTSTEP 3.2/Soft PC + Windows 7)SCO Unix/Windows Session 8)iRMX for Windows 9)Insignia SoftWindows for Sun Windows NT's 16-bit subsystem and SunSoft's WABI are not supported. Win/V and Windows95 =================== Due to major internal changes from Windows 3.1, Win/V does not work on Windows95. However, by taking advantage of Windows95's Multiboot feature you can continue to use Windows 3.1 and Win/V alongside Windows 95. Not only does this provide you with bilingual flexibility it also allows you to set up a more stable environment by avoiding conflicts between different language versions of support files such as .DLLs and OLE clients. Once a machine is setup to Multiboot, pressing either F4 or F8 when the "Starting Windows95..." message appears will allow you to start your previous version of Windows 3.x and thus Win/V. The method for setting up your PC for Multi-booting depends upon whether DOS or Windows95 is already installed on your hard disk. 1) Only DOS and Windows 3.1 are installed on your PC ---------------------------------------------------- 1. Start Windows 95 setup normally. (Run SETUP.EXE on the CD-ROM or floppy) 2. When asked in which directory you want to install Windows95 DO NOT choose to overwrite your existing Windows directory. Instead choose an alternate such as C:\WIN95. 3. Ignore the message about having to re-install your applications. To create a truly stable Windows95 environment we recommend you do so anyway to make sure registry values are set correctly and cleanly without extra baggage from your previous Windows. 4. Once installation of Windows95 is complete you will be able to use the F4 or F8 hot keys to start Windows 3.1 and Win/V. 2) You have already installed Win95 or it came preinstalled on your PC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Use the Properties popup menu command to remove the hidden attributes of the following files in the root of a bootable DOS 6.x diskette: MS-DOS.SYS IO.SYS 2. Copy the following files from the DOS-bootable floppy disk to the root of your C: drive: A:\MSDOS.SYS -> C:\MSDOS.DOS A:\IO.SYS -> C:\IO.DOS A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT -> C:\AUTOEXEC.DOS A:\CONFIG.SYS -> C:\CONFIG..DOS 3. Edit the CONFIG.DOS AUTOEXEC.DOS to reflect settings you would like for a DOS/Windows environment copying in drivers as needed. 4. Use the properties again to take the Read-Only attribute for the file MSDOS.SYS in the root directory of C: 5. Edit MSDOS.SYS using Notepad to add the following line in the [Options] section: BootMulti=1 6. Exit Notepad, saving your changes then use the properties tab to set the Read-only attribute again. 7. You will now be able to start DOS 6.x using the F4 or F8 hotkeys and then install Windows 3.x and Win/V into their own own directory HARDWARE WITH WHICH PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN ENCOUNTERED ================================================== 1) Display Drivers and Associated Utilities (1) #9's Zoom utility, ATI's FlexDesk and Compaq's video control should only be used in the Original (English) mode. (2) TMS34010/34020(TIGA/DGIS)-based cards cannot be used with Win/V. To use Win/V please switch the card to VGA mode. (3) Pro Graphics 1280(Media Vision): Make sure you have upgraded to Windows 3.11 and add the following line to the[NoEtoOpaque] section of WIDOW.INI: hires32.drv=Pro Graphics 1280 Display Driver (4) Compaq QVision 1024/1280 (Deskpro M-series, i-Series and XE-series): If you encounter a divide by zero error, use DOS EDIT to add the line BitBlt=OFF to the individual driver sections of COMPAQ.INI. Example: [cpqhv08] BitBlt=OFF The Qvision 2000 hardware on the newer Compaq XE and XL machines does not have this problem. 2) Printer Drivers (1) The Canon LBP-B406S driver included with Japanese Windows (LIPS3.DRV) cannot be used with Win/V. In this case use the English Windows driver for the Canon LBP-4 and set the printer for English (CAPSL) mode. (2) Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 540/550 The driver for this printer will not allow kanji fonts to be chosen in applications. Please use the driver for the HP 500c instead. You will still have access to this printer's color features. APPLICATIONS WITH PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS ========================================= Basically any application that provides font manipulation (scaling, warping, rotation, etc) through the TrueType Application Programming Interface (API) will not be able to carry out these changes on Kanji fonts. Font manipulation will be possible with English TrueType fonts. This is an inherant limitation of the current version of Win/V. 1) Corel Draw 3.0J Kanji TrueType fonts are not supported although English TrueType fonts can be used. 2) Microsoft WordArt(Bundled with Microsoft Word Power Up Kit) Kanji TrueType fonts are not supported although English TrueType fonts can be used. 3) Chameleon/NFS When logging into a host General Protection Faults (GPFs) may occur. 4) SailingDraw++ Since Kanji TrueType fonts are required this application will not run correctly. 5) Designer 4.0J Kanji TrueType fonts are not supported although English TrueType fonts can be used. In addition, certain character modification features cannot be used. 6) DFJ/Win Occasionally, input characters will not display. 7) Wordperfect 6.0J Because of the non-standard programming of this application Wordperfect 6.0J is not supported under Win/V. 5.2J does work correctly but cannot be used with faxing applications such as Delrina WinFax Pro. 8) Applications using Win32s. If you encounter problems with applications that use Win32s, make sure you have the lastest version of Japanese Win32s installed (Currently 1.25) and that the AnsiCP value in WIN32S.INI in your Windows System directory is set to 932. However, if you wish to install on top of an older version please observe the following precautions; 1) Answer "No" when asked whether to overwrite WIFEMAN.INI then make the following change after installation is complete: [DefaultFont] FontPackage=WINVGOT.FON becomes FontPackage=WINVDEF.FON Since there have been major changes to the other .INI files, answer "Yes" when asked whether to overwrite. If upgrading from version 1.0 observe the following: 1) If using Hide Maru or HideTerm, you will need to change all fonts. Either change to the System font or in the case of Hyoujun Mincho or Hyoujun Gothic choose then next smallest font size as below: Hyoujun Mincho/Hyoujun Gothic 13 => Hyoujun Mincho/Hyoujun Gothic 12 Hyoujun Mincho/Hyoujun Gothic 16 => Hyoujun Mincho/Hyoujun Gothic 14 Hyoujun Mincho/Hyoujun Gothic 18 => Hyoujun Mincho/Hyoujun Gothic 16 2) If using Lotus Organizer R1.1J previously saved .ORG files may become unreadable. Before updating Win/V export each section to a Comma- Separated-Value (CSV) file. After updating, restart Organizer and re-import all the sections.
