Welcome to KG 1.01 (Shareware) August 1992 Copyright 1991-2 by KiCompWare. All Rights Reserved. Introduction KG or Kanji Guess is a program for aiding in the study of Japanese. KG currently has several different types of quizzes to help learn the associations between the kanji word, the reading, and the translation. KG 1.0 works with a mouse and is the recommended way of using KG, but keyboard commands are also available. KG supports the following graphics adapter: Hercules, EGA, VGA, ATT400. Super VGA and IBM 8514 are supported automatically using VGA. KG 1.0 does not support CGA. KG requires a hard drive or a floppy drive with at least 600k of available space. KG 1.01 is a bug fix for PCs without a mouse (see 7.) KG 1.01 also adds three more vocabulary files: misc3.kg, jord13.kg, tsuushin.kg. We have received several other kg files. Some of the files are longer than the 100 entry limit for KG and others are still awaiting editting. Thank you for your submissions. We will make them available as time permits. Installing KG Before doing the installation you should read through Section 1 Installation in the User Reference Guide. The following is a brief description of the installation. Installing KG is fairly easy. The basic steps are as follows. mkdir \kg copy \kg kg10dist.exe kg10dist When the archive is finished unarchiving, be sure to check all the variables in the kg.ini file. 2. BBS - Bulletin Board System ------------------------------ KiCompWare provides technical support via a Bulliten Board Service (BBS). The BBS operates 24 hours a day. It is occassionally not accessable for maintenance purposes. The BBS phone number is (414)-735-6020. KiCompWare can also be reached by mailing to: KiCompWare 1812 N. Erb St. Appleton, WI 54911 3. Registering your copy of KG 1.0 KG 1.0 is ShareWare, meaning that you may test drive KG (give KG a trial test) and if you continue to use it you must register your copy by sending $30 to KiCompWare. Please support KG by registering. KG is the result of many long nights, weekend and vacation days. With out your support there can be no further upgrades to KG. (The register.me file is provided to make it easy to register your copy.) 4. Viewing and Printing the KG manual You may view the KG manual using any ascii browsing program. Please note that there are Japanese characters embedded in the file. To see the Japanese characters as well as the ASCII characters use the view program. (view kg.man) The KG User Reference Manual was setup to be printed using MOKE's jprint program version 1.3 from the MOKE 2.1 distribution (Other programs that can print Japanese text with Ascii may be OK also). For best results use a HP Laserjet II or a Epson Compatible 24 pin printer. For the HP Laserjet use the following command jprint -hr kg.man for Epson compatible printers use jprint -L kg.man The file has been setup with 46 lines per page (so both commands will give satisfactory results.). Please note that the dos print program or any other of the widely available printing programs for dos may or may not successfully print the User Reference Manual, that is, without the Japanese characters. But for best results use a program that will also print Japanese characters. 5. Manual Changes Section 1 kg.ini KGQscrn KGQscrn when yes (default) displays the KG 1.0 Kanji Quiz in big letters on the screen after all returns to the main screen. On slower machines this may be tedious. Turn it off with KGQscrn no sound In the quizzes, a beep sounds if the choice you made is incorrect. Setting sound to "no" will turn off the beep. Appendix C VIEW View supports the same graphics adapters that KG does. Hercules, EGA, VGA, and ATT400 are built into VIEW. View will work with CGA graphics adapters, but the BGI driver is not supplied. 6. Bug Found in KG 1.0 KG 1.01 is a bug fix for a mouse related problem. The bug affected some PCs that did not have a mouse. The bug caused the PC to hang in various places where the mouse was being turned on and off for display, such as the File Dialog box routine. 7. Making a file for Load Random 100 Cut the following batch commands out and put in lesscopy.bat to get a file suitable for the Load Random 100 function under the file menu for kg. copy less1.kg+less10.kg+less11.kg+less2.kg+less3.kg+less4.kg /b tmp1 copy less5.kg+less6.kg+less7.kg+less8.kg+less9.kg+tmp1 /b lessall.kg del tmp1 8.
