Jisho v1.0 Japanese-English Dictionary for Psion 3a/c/mx (C) Copyright 1998-2000 Jamie Packer http://www.gingko.demon.co.uk jamie@gingko.demon.co.uk INTRODUCTION Jisho is a Japanese-English dictionary for the Psion. Although the underlying data file is biased towards Japanese to English, it allows searching for both Japanese and English words/phrases. INSTALLATION There are two versions of the program: one that uses a 14x14 font and one that uses a 16x16 font. The latter is more readable but the font file is slightly larger. The 14x14 font is the same one as used by the JEdit program so, if you are using JEdit, that may be the best choice. If you have installed a previous version if Jisho then you only need one of the files JISHO104.ZIP (for the 14x14 font) or JISHO106.ZIP (for the 16x16 font). If you installing the program for the first time then you will also need the file JISHO10X.ZIP which contains the dictionary and data files. The file JISHO104.ZIP contains the following files: \app\jisho\jisho.hlp \app\jisho14.opa \fon\pjfont.14 readme.txt The file JISHO106.ZIP contains the following files: \app\jisho\jisho.hlp \app\jisho16.opa \fon\pjfont.16 readme.txt The file JISHO10X.ZIP contains the following files: \dic\k2r.dat \dic\r2k.dat \dic\edict.opd \dic\edict.jdx readme.txt You should copy the files to your Psion in the same directory structure. These files can be on any drive (they do not all need to be on the same drive). Note that you can install either the 14x14 version or the 16x16 version. The Psion will not allow you to install both. Note that some of these are shared with other applications and so you may already have them on your system. The shared files are: from 'Saikan' \dic\k2r.dat \dic\r2k.dat from 'JEdit' \fon\pjfont.14 BASIC INSTRUCTIONS This release of the program has two search methods: indexed lookup and database search. Both of these can be used to search for Japanese words. In this version there is no index of English words so only a database search can be used for English. Indexed Lookup This uses an index file to find all entries starting with the search string. This is very fast but has some limitations. To limit the size of the index file, only Database Search A more flexible alternative is a full search of the database. This allows the dictionary to be searched for any string. An English search string can also include wildcards: "?" to match any single character, "*" to match any sequence of characters. Entering Japanese Search strings are entered in Roman letters. Input is accepted in any of the common romanization schemes (nihonshiki, kunreishiki or Hepburn) as well as some variants (e.g. using `L' for `R'). The Test button on the dialog can be used to check the input string for acceptability; this will display as much of the string that can be transliterated -- the string will be truncated at the point an error is found. Search Results Search results are displayed in a list, each row showing the Japanese in kanji (if applicable) and kana followed by the English translations. The cursor keys can be used to scroll through the list. The diamond key switches between - the list view - a full screen display of the current entry (this allows the whole of long entries to be seen) - information on the kanji in the entry Help See the program's help for more information.
