980615, updated 980729 How to Japanize your WinCE H/PC or PalmPC (tested on CE 2.0, Velo 500) - get KCTRL (Itoh's Mobile Computer Software Gallery -> WindowsCE http://www.oohito.com/) - get KanjiIn (same page) - get JISYO_M or JISYO_S or compatible input data dictionaries (Itoh's page -> Data) - get CEFONT (Shouji's HP http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~mx5t-syuj/data.htm) optionally - get KPAD - get KVIEWER (both Itoh's page, useful for JIS documents) - get HotKey (Hiraide's HP http://www.tt.rim.or.jp/~hiraide/) - Unpack the stuff - put kctrl.dll in the \windows\ dir - put CEFONT in \windows\fonts (no conversion please) - put KINPUT (and Kpad, KVIEWER) in program folders of your choice (eg. Ktools) - put HotKey wherever you like it - put JISYO_? in a folder of your choice - check in PocketWord if CEFONT is selectable, if necessary restart your machine ** instead of the HotKey program the CE quick launch keys can also be used ** - put a link to HotKey in \windows\StartUp\ - run HotKey - assign a hotkey to KanjiIn.exe - hit the hotkey, thus starting KanjiIn - hit esc, single-click KanjiIn in the taskbar -> setup - set dictionary (to JISYO_?), pre-paste wait = 1, no quick-send, no post-paste wait, no jis (these settings tested for Velo 500) -> OK That's it. Now try it out: - run PocketWord, select CEFONT 14point (8 and 10 should also work) - hit the hotkey, starting KanjiIn - enter Japanese - hit enter twice The Japanese you typed should now appear in PocketWord. All the software mentioned is free, even the source is available for some of these programs (see Itoh's page). Many thanks to all who made this possible, especially Mr. Itoh, Mr. Hiraide and Mr. Shouji. And to Monashs' Jim Breen. What remains to be done? Compile a better font, more input methods. Personally I'd like to have a nearly full-blown UNICODE font that would cover Chinese, Japanese, Korean as well as the Western languages. And input methods for Chinese and Korean (like KanjiIn). There's a Japanese dictionary for WinCE on the Monash Nihongo page (http://ai.bpa.arizona.edu/~mramsey/japanese.html) Some more infos on Internationalization (for Windows 95/98/NT/CE), Unicode, Java with a focus on CJK can be found at my homepage http://www.geocities.com/tokyo/pagoda/1675 --- Additional Notes Word97 issues: (the following applies to CE 2.0 with sp-1 insalled. Working as described on a Velo 500 and Word97) Foremost: always save as rtf, with no conversion PC/mobile device. Seems to give the best results. A file containing CJK chars can be opened and read correctly by Word97, if MS Offices' Japanese Extensions are installed (on the Office cd). If the font used for CJK on the mobile device is not the same as on the PC, the chars will display as boxes. Workaround: Select these boxes, format as Bitstream Cyberbit. This appears to work always, format as MS Gothic sometimes doesn't work. A similar bug will show when opening a file in PocketWord: If CEFONT is installed on the mobile device, a CJK text opened in PocketWord will show boxes instead of chars. The font for these parts of text cannot be changed in PocketWord, thus: Either the pwd/rtf file has to be manipulated or under Word97, the CJK text has to be formatted with font CEFONT before saving and transfering to the mobile device. For this a little text passage in roman letters may be formatted exclusively in CEFONT (on both sides), then use "copy format" in Word97 to copy this formatting to the CJK before saving. --------- For your enjoyment Rafael Humpert rhumpert @ iname.com (please note that I'm not involved in the writing of any of these programs, I just compiled the information)
