J I T E N ~~~~~~~~~ Jiten is a freeware Japanese and English dictionary program which operates under RiscOS on Acorn computers. It was written by Philip Murray-Pearce (philip.murray-pearce@which.net). Jiten provides an on-line dictionary for Japanese and English using the Edict dictionary file coordinated by Jim Breen. Words can be translated from Japanese to English and vice versa; alternative translations are given where applicable and the program includes a dictionary browser facility. Word entry is in Kanji/Kana, Romaji, or English and results of searches are displayed in Kanji/Kana, Romaji, English, and EUC; it is not necessary to be able to read Kanji/Kana to be able to use the program. Jiten is able to take advantage of future updates to Edict whenever these become available. Jiten is available as a zip archive in either of two forms. JitenF/zip (1816k) is the full, ready-to-run, version of Jiten, which includes Edict 26Jun98 V98-002 and the three associated index files generated by Jiten. JitenC/zip (149k) is a version of Jiten without the Edict file and the three associated index files generated by Jiten. If you have already downloaded a copy of Edict, simply run this version of Jiten and drag the Edict file to Jiten's icon on the icon bar; this will generate the full version of Jiten within about 20 minutes.
